Wait a few weeks for fall planting

Many of my clients have been working hard on installing their yards all spring and summer. Lots have been graded, sprinklers installed and lush grass has finally replaced dirt. It may be tempting to continue the install process and buy trees, shrubs and perennials.
With the hot weather this time of year, I always encourage clients to wait a few more weeks until daytime temperatures come down into the 80's. Heat stresses newly planted material, sometimes beyond recovery.
One of the ideal times to plant is late August - mid-September. Temperatures are good and days are shorter. Your plants will look better and get established easily.
Remember to put mulch around newly planted material. This will shade roots in the warmer months and protect them from frigid winter temperatures. Happy fall planting, everyone!
