Looking for Fall Color?

As the weather cools, it might be tempting to throw in the towel when it comes to planting. But fall is actually an ideal time to plant--particularly trees and shrubs. You can also find great prices this time of year in nurseries.

Fall is also sometimes the only time when you can find a wide selection of fall-flowering perennials. Here are some of my favorites:

Asters
Many varieties of this hardy perennial are available--pinks and purples of varying heights. They attain their full size quickly and make excellent cut flowers.

Mums
Nothing says autumn like mums--a tried and true performer in our area. Comes in almost every color imaginable and quickly forms small shrub-like mounds of foliage covered in flowers until the first frost.

Ornamental Grasses

Ornamental grasses do not bloom but their decorative plumes can be showstoppers in any garden. Leave plumes on grass for winter interest. Again, many varieties are available and they can blend into multiple landscaping styles.
